Combination Codes

A combination code is a single code used to classify:
Two diagnosis or
A diagnosis with an associated secondary process (manifestation)
A diagnosis with an associated complication
Combination codes are identified by referring to subterm entries in the Alphabetic Index and by reading the inclusion and exclusion notes in the Tabular list.

Assign only the combination code when that code fully identifies the diagnostic condition involved or when the Alphabetic Index so directs.  Multiple coding should not be used when the classification provides a combination code that clearly identifies all of the elements documented in the diagnosis.  When the combination code lacks necessary specificity in describing the manifestation or complication, an additional code should be used as a secondary code.

Here is an example:  Acute cholecystitis with cholelithiasis  should be coded with a signle code that fully describes the condition: 574.00

NHA Certification

The National Healthcare Association offers the "CBCS" certification. Most medical practices in this area recognize the AAPC. The NHA certification is a stepping stone towards other major certificates. For example, CCS (AHIMA) or CPC (AAPC).
We urge any students with the NHA certification to move forward to other certifications as they gain knowledge. CGS Billing service can provide training for both AAPC and NHA certifications. Go to to learn more.

What Are the Students Saying?

Student Comments:

I just want to thank you so much for working with me. I know there were times when things had to be expedited, but you met the challenge with flying colors. I also wanted to thank you for giving CGS Billing Services an opportunity to show what they can do to help students get credentialed without so many months of schooling and at a fraction of the cost. I hope your day goes well and as things continue to unfold, I will keep you posted.

Thank you again,
